Historically, Sukkur has been a hub for various artisanal trades, including boat construction, leather crafting, and fabric production. Under the Talpur dynasty, these local industries faced suppression due to an oppressive fiscal policy linked to the feudal Jagirdari system, which hindered the growth of private businesses. Despite this, the Talpurs' penchant for imported luxuries inadvertently boosted international commerce.

With the advent of the 20th century and the introduction of new technologies, Sukkur's inhabitants leveraged their entrepreneurial spirit to create a myriad of small manufacturing units. These enterprises produced a diverse range of goods, from textiles, sweet treats, and baked goods to domestic items, pharmaceuticals, tobacco products, ceramic tiles, and knitwear. They also continued to produce traditional commodities like edible oils, metal locks, sturdy safes, storage chests, handcrafted leather goods, detergent powders, writing fluids, shoe polish, woven mats, and rugs.

The period following the nation's division, especially after the erection of the Guddu Barrage, saw a significant uptick in Sukkur's agricultural yield. This surge in farming output gave rise to a thriving agro-industrial sector and propelled the region into the timber export business.
